Lightweight plate designed to make sediment grain counting more orderly and help reduce duplicate counts during microscope or binocular analysis.
SedimPlak is a rectangular counting plate designed to support sediment grain counting and composition analysis. Its structure includes internal walls that create aligned grooves where sediment grains can be distributed, helping to keep samples in position during observation.
This design makes the counting process more organised, faster and easier to control, especially when working with small sediment fractions. It is a useful tool for sedimentology, mineralogy, marine geology, sand analysis, laboratory work and educational activities.
The invention is protected by Spanish patent ES2933384B2 and was developed by Dr. Laura del Valle Villalonga, collaborator of the Earth Sciences research group at the University of the Balearic Islands. Geologia365 markets SedimPlak under a licence agreement with the UIB, covering the patent, the SedimPlak trademark and the technical use protocol.
The plate has been manufactured together with Eurecat, Technology Centre of Catalonia, using thermoplastic filament 3D printing. It is made from recyclable plastic and offers a compact, very lightweight format suitable for laboratory use, teaching and technical sediment sample analysis.
